WCPSS Mastery Learning Model - Target Essential Learning Outcome

The beginning of the Mastery Learning Model is grounded in teachers identifying the specific content standards in terms of what students should know, understand, and be able to do as a result of learning.  For teachers who are working to ‘unpack’ the standards, paying close attention to the nouns will identify what the students should learn and paying close attention to the verbs will identify the expected thinking level.

The first element of the mastery learning model is a key component of what is part of a larger recursive process. Teachers identify the learning outcomes based on content standards; however, based on additional data collected, teachers adjust the learning outcomes to include prerequisite skills necessary to the new learning or increase the rigor of previously mastered learning.
